Season 4 of “Audibles with Jason Scarborough” continued this past weekend, with episode 5 airing on TV stations all across the Magnolia State.
Episode 5 features Ole Miss baseball legend and former MLB All Star for the Chicago Cubs, Don Kessinger. Born in Forrest City, Arkansas, Kessinger was a four sport All-State and All-American athlete for the Forrest City High School Mustangs.
Kessinger then went to Ole Miss, where he earned All-Conference, All-SEC, and All-America honors in both basketball and baseball for the Rebels.
Kessinger went on to become a 6-time All Star and 2-time Golden Glove winner with the Chicago Cubs, playing along Cub greats Ernie Banks and Ron Santo. He went on to play briefly with the St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago White Sox, and was the last player-manager in the American League for the White Sox.
All told, Kessinger played 15 seasons in MLB. He also came back to Oxford to coach his beloved Ole Miss Rebels for a time. Kessinger’s #11 is now retired on the wall at Swayze Field, one of only 2 people to have that honor, joining fellow Ole Miss Rebel great Jake Gibbs.
